A 2nd Birthday in Edmonton: the Balloons, Cupcakes, Cakes, Photographer and Venue that Saved the Day

Our Jones family photo says it all.

Alex’s second birthday party went off without a hitch. Hah-hah!

If you are searching for birthday party vendors for balloons, cupcakes, cakes, a venue and photography in Edmonton — I know secret superstars.

My two girlfriends, Joanne and Julie, were my wing-mommas. All of our little ones are May Babies and best buddies — Alex, Charlie and Elizabeth. So, we decided to throw a combined second birthday bash for all of them and make it memorable.

Like most Edmonton Moms, we wanted the party to be perfect. Like, more than perfect. It had to be unique. It’s easy to get carried away with unrealistic expectations, though. I saw photos on Instagram of themed birthday party packages and decorations to match, but with a high price tag. After some consideration, we decided to curate the party ourselves.

We wanted balloons, cupcakes, cakes for each of the toddlers, a photographer and a venue (not our home) where they could run free and enjoy the party. With little effort, we grabbed supplies and found incredible birthday party vendors in Edmonton that went the extra mile for us.

Consider these amazing folks for your next party. Despite the fun twists that toddlers throw in — they made the party perfect.

Balloons in Edmonton: Ur Deco

Tamara is the amazing Edmonton Mom behind Ur Deco. She specializes in hand-built balloon decor and party planning. Tamara creates balloon arches, balloon centrepieces, bigger structures and more on site, at very affordable prices. She spun together a huge balloon arch for us in under half-an-hour. It was the focal point in the cafe.

Tamara moved to Edmonton under two years ago; she’s new to Edmonton and brought her thriving business here from Montreal. So amazing!

Cupcakes in Edmonton: Cupcake Mama

Our cupcakes were to die for, and all of our family and friends loved them. (They still talk about how good they were!) They were made by Cupcake Mama.

We found Cupcake Mama by fluke. Joanne stumbled upon Maka Eatery downtown, nestled inside the front doors of the Don Wheaton YMCA, on a lunch break one day. Stephanie and Himanshu are the powerhouse couple that opened Maka Eatery, and they also make specialty cupcakes as a side business, called Cupcake Mama. They make mini chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet cakes with creamy, sweet icing that is the best I’ve ever tried. They focus on only the best ingredients. Their eatery serves holistic and vegan lunch and smoothies, and their cupcakes are just as consciously-made.

Specialty Cakes: YEG Bakers

YEG Bakers made the most adorable trio of cakes for us. Alex got a car-themed cake with bubble gum flavoured green icing (yum!), Elizabeth got an adorable Daniel Tiger cake with the cutest little fondant characters, and Charlie got his favourite Paw Patrol puppies on a blue cake. The cakes were so detailed and the filling inside was so delicious. We loved them!

Edmonton Photographer: Christina Lazure

Christina Lazure was was a pleasure to have at the kid’s birthday party. She stayed under-the-radar, taking great candid photos of our little ones. I loved her style and willingness to take ever single type of photo we wanted. We’d made a list of desired poses and combinations, and she delivered. As a new photographer, she is trying to grow her business, so she is offering her services at a low price right now. Take advantage!

Edmonton Venue: Cafe O’ Play Riverbend

Hands down, Cafe O’ Play was the best place for a toddler party. There was zero crying the whole time, they were having too much fun! As a play cafe, it’s a great place for moving babies and toddlers who want to explore without an agenda. We got the whole place to ourselves for two hours, full coffee service, tablecloths, a juice box for each kiddo in attendance, and help coordinating our guests coming in the door.
